Expect Respect Night Focuses On Preventing Bullying

Forum Helps Community Members See Their Role In Bully Prevention

Helena, MT – October 5th, 2011- The Helena School District is hosting a community “Expect Respect” night on October 6th at 7 PM in the Helena Middle School auditorium.  Please join us to explore the roles of schools, parents, and community in addressing the issue of bullying.

In Helena, half of the children between 12 and 14 years-old and 1 in 4 teens between 14 and 18 report having been bullied.  Bullying can happen anywhere, face to face, in text messages or online.  It is important our community understand the rules in bullying have changed as well as the approach we use to combat this problem.

Helena Schools Superintendent Keith Meyer says, “We recognize how vital it is for our community to communicate what we want kids to do rather than what we don’t want kids to do.  If we as a community set a standard of expecting respect from each other, bullying will be viewed as an unacceptable behavior where community members, teachers, and parents hold youth and each other to a high standard.”

For more information on this event or to set up an interview, please contact the Superintendent’s office by calling 324-2001.
